The Dukal gauze sponge is a sterile, woven 4 x 4 inch square made of USP Type VII gauze. It has an X-ray detectable marker filament, so the sponge can be found on imaging. It is made for use during procedures, including inside the body.
- Woven gauze made mainly for use inside the body, on a surgical incision or on internal organs or structures during a procedure
- Used to control bleeding, absorb fluid, or protect organs and structures from abrasion, drying, or contamination during a procedure
- Also called a laparotomy sponge; it may also be used for prepping the patient
- X-ray detectable marker filament to help detect gossypiboma, a sponge left inside a patient
